IHAV × Omenka App
Become an Omenka App Student Ambassador
Help keep the Igbo language alive on your campus. Join a network of students sharing Igbo words, proverbs, music and culture through the Omenka App, a volunteer programme of Indigenous Hands and Voices (IHAV).
Why this matters
Every language carries a people’s heritage
IHAV is a U.S. non-profit research organization working with minority and endangered languages, both signed and spoken. Our commitment is “to document, promote, and preserve the indigenous and endangered linguistic and cultural heritages” of communities around the world.
Igbo is rich in proverbs, stories, music and tradition, yet fewer young people are learning to read, write and speak it fluently. Student Ambassadors help change that, one campus and one conversation at a time.
About the Omenka App
Omenka is a community app that celebrates Igbo language, culture and people. It includes an Igbo–English dictionary with pronunciation, the Igbo calendar, proverbs, poems, stories and classic Igbo music.
