Making Igbo Visible Online: Social Media and Language Growth

For a long time, people feared that indigenous languages like Igbo would go extinct due to the advent of the internet. But today, the opposite is happening. Social media has become a digital town square where our language is not just surviving, it is thriving.

As our elders say, “Onye n n’ta n’as na ngh n’ma” (He who is in the center says he is not in the field). Today, the “center” of the world is online, and if we want our heritage to stay alive, we must make it visible there.

The Power of the Scroll

In the past, you only heard Igbo in the village or at home. Now, you hear it on Instagram, Twitter (X), and TikTok. This visibility is important for three main reasons:

  1. Normalization: When young people see influencers, musicians, and tech leaders speaking Igbo, they realize the language is cool and modern.
  2. Global Reach: A person in London can learn a proverb from a person in Enugu in seconds. Social media has deleted the distance between the diaspora and home.
  3. Visual Learning: Language is easier to learn when you can see facial expressions and hear the correct tone.

Omenka App: Taking the Classroom to TikTok

One of the most exciting ways we are growing the language is through live, interactive learning. A perfect example of this is the Omenka App Weekly TikTok Monday Live Class. Every Monday, we go live to teach the beauty of Igbo grammar, culture, and proverbs.

  • Real-Time Interaction: Students can ask questions and get answers immediately.
  • Building Community: It isn’t just a lesson; it’s a gathering of people who love their roots.
  • Consistency: By showing up every Monday, we remind the digital world that Igbo is a living, breathing language that belongs in the future.

Small Steps to Make Igbo Visible

You don’t need to be a linguist to help the language grow online. If you take these small actions every day, you will be making the most of your time, learning Igbo online:

  • Use Igbo Captions: Even if you write in English, add an Igbo greeting or proverb at the end of your post.
  • Tag and Share: When you see educational content from platforms like S-DELI or Omenka App, share it. Engagement tells the social media algorithms that our language is important.
  • Comment in Igbo: Practice your writing by replying to friends in Igbo. Don’t worry about being perfect; as we say, “Agwa m g, agwa m g, na-eme ka nti rie ihe” (Telling you over and over makes the ear eat/understand).

The Bottom Line

Language growth is a collective effort. Social media is the tool, but you are the voice. By showing up in digital spaces, whether through our Omenka App TikTok live class or a simple Facebook post, we are ensuring that the Igbo language remains visible, respected, and loud.

Let us keep posting, keep signing, and keep speaking. Our language lives through our screens!
